Blueberries and Peaches...A Seasonal Treat!

July 11, 2007

Dear Friends,

In several parts of the country, it is time to begin
harvesting peaches and blueberries...two of my very
favorite fruits. These fruits not only taste fantastic,
but they are so essential to good health.

Both fruits contain high levels of antioxidants, however,
blueberries are tops. They are both excellent for the
digestive system and are exceptional choices when treating
constipation. Blueberries are also great for treating the
opposite problem...especially in children. Interesting
that it can treat both problems, I think. Not many over
the counter drugs can do that! An easy remedy for children
with tummy upset is to mix some blueberries and peaches
with homemade yogurt or blend them into a kefir smoothie.

If you can get to a u-pick farm, I would highly recommed
it! Blueberries are so easy to pick and even small
children can help. Peaches can be found at farm stands and
local orchards. Make sure you harvest enough to enjoy
fresh and have plenty to freeze. You may also want to make
peach preserves, which according to my 97 year old
great-grandma, were her mother's favorite! Great-Grandma
Schweda still makes the same recipe today and I was
thrilled to recieve a jar the last time I went to visit,
although I tend to sweeten mine a little less than Grandma
does! (She is bound to her white sugar ways! It appears
that it hasn't done her much damage. She is still going
strong, living alone on her farm, and will be 98 this
September!)

Blueberries and peaches combine like a dream in crisps,
crumbles, buckles, and pies! It gives such pleasure to
pick your own produce on a sunny summer's day, head home
for a glass of cold iced-tea, slice up your fruit out at
the picnic table under a shady tree, and then head inside
to the kitchen, hopefully with a breeze blowing through the
window, to bake a delicious homemade, old-fashioned pie!

Another simple treat is to blend some blueberries and/or
peaches together with some yogurt and pour into popsicle
molds or dixie cups. This is a treat your children will
love!

I will hopefully add some more tips and quick recipes on
the site this week, so make sure to check it out.

Oh, and one more exciting bit of news...I am now working
with an Amish neighbor of mine, Marianne, who happens to be
an herbalist and a midwife. We are making soap together
and she is teaching me so much. I will soon have enough
soap in stock to finally list our first quality bars on the
web-site! I was pleased with my soap before, but I am
over-joyed with what we are coming up with together! She
is also sharing "generations-old" herbal remedies with me
and I will soon be selling these blends for you to make
into tinctures and oil infusions at home! We will also be
selling Marianne's famous laundry soap!

Blessings,
Jennifer Ferris
