Make your own healing ointments!
January 11, 2008
Dear Friends, Are you looking for a fun and simple winter project? How about making some herbal salves and balms? We offer some herbal blends on our Family Apothecary page at the website, www.fromfieldsandgardens.com. When you purchase these blends, we include beeswax tarts and printed directions for you. Making ointments couldn't be any simpler! You only need to provide the oil for your herbal infusion. Olive oil is a great choice, but any good, skin conditioning oil would be fine. You will appreciate having healing ointments on hand. They are an important ingredient in any well stocked home apothecary! They store easily in old baby food jars or in plastic containers and you can make several to carry in your purse, glove compartment, or diaper bag. If you already have some beeswax and olive oil on hand, here is a simply wonderful recipe for making your own herbal chest rub. You will need some essential oils for this recipe. This rub is great for relieving chest congestion during colds and coughs. A similar herbal chest rub would cost you almost $20.00 for a 4 ounce jar. Think of the money you'll save by making your own. Natural Chest Rub 1-2 cups warmed olive oil 1 ounce melted beeswax 10 drops eucalyptus essential oil 10 drops lavender essential oil 5 drops peppermint essential oil Mix this together well and pour into an old baby food jar or a plastic container. If you want to make this chest rub even more powerful, infuse your olive oil with fresh white pine needles for one week prior to making the ointment. Strain out the needles before using. Speaking of pine needles...Did you know that a strong tea, or infusion, made of pine needles can be used to break up congestion and relieve coughs and colds? Drink it hot with a bit of honey added to it. Pine needles are very easy to find and are high in vitamin C! Pick them and use them fresh for best results. Last month, we offered a special version of our very popular, Flu Fighter Blend. This formula was specifically for making a syrup and had cloves and cinnamon stick added. Well, it was so well received that I have decided to make it permanent. This blend makes it super easy for you to concoct your own family cough, cold, & flu syrup. It tastes great is wonderful for children. It contains elderberries, elder flowers, echinacea, yarrow, and now cloves and cinnamon! Cloves and cinnamon are both very powerful natural antibiotics and immune system boosters, too! They also impart a tasty, spiciness to the syrup, making it quite delicious. It is available on our Family Apothecary page. When you order your blend, you will receive detailed instructions for making your tincture or syrup. You may also want to download a copy of my e-book, The Kitchen Apothecary. Honestly, making syrups and tinctures is so easy! It would cost you around $15.00 to purchase a good quality 8 ounce jar of herbal syrup. With our blend, you will have a quart of syrup that will last a large family the entire winter! Tinctures can be even more expensive! A 2 ounce jar can cost upwards of $10.00 or more. The same reasoning applies to purchasing kefir grains. You can easily spend a lot of money purchasing capsules of acidophilus and probiotic supplements. With your own kefir grains, you can have a lifetime supply of the best probiotic ever at your fingertips whenever you need it! We have several items on sale at the website. Make sure you check it out! Our goat milk body butter is bound to be a big hit! If you ordered some Vanilla & Lemongrass this week, please make sure to leave us some feedback on the online guest book so we know how you like it! We are also slowly introducing a new line of goat milk soaps called Goat Milk Smoothies! These soaps are made with our own goat milk PLUS 100% fresh juices! They are very nice and go great with the body butters and cremes that will be added to the catalog over the next few weeks. So far, we have Carrot Juice Smoothie available. Our "Aromatherapy" bar is also made with 100% grape juice. One more thing...my brother-in-law is a beekeeper and he has a new site that is totally cool! It is full of information and educational stuff that the kids will find fascinating! You definitely want to check it out...www.promisedlandhoney.com. We have a link on our site. Ok, one last thing...how about a coupon code to save 10% off your next order? Enter code: winter Shalom! Jennifer www.fromfieldsandgardens.com Jennifer@fromfieldsandgardens.com
